Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
This basilica is the largest in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church features ancient mosaics from the 5th century and 36 Athenian marble and four granite columns. Its Medieval bell tower is the highest in Rome at 240 feet.
Basilica of San Giovanni (aka Basilica of St. John Lateran)
The Church of Rome's cathedral is the Pope's official ecclesiastical seat. It is the oldest among the four major Roman basilicas. The cathedral sits adjacent to the Lateran Palace. The palace is a former Papal residence. Currently, the palace houses the Museo Storico Vaticano (or Museum of the Papal State).
The Catacombs
The Catacombs featured on this tour are those of San Callisto, Santa Domitilla or San Sebastiano. The San Callisto catacombs were built near the end of the 2nd century. It was the official burial site for the Roman Church, where more than 50 martyrs and more than 15 pontiffs were buried. The Santa Domitilla catacombs are the oldest of Romes's underground burial sites and the only one to contain bones. Santa Domitilla also includes a 2nd century fresco painting of the Last Supper and other valuable artifacts. San Sebastiano is the least-preserved of the catacombs because it's easily accessed by the public. It's also one of the smallest Christian cemeteries.
