This tour takes place along the dark edges of Charleston's haunted historic district and is the only tour to give you exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the Provost Dungeon, located in the basement of the Old Exchange Building, one of America's most historic buildings.
The Dungeon was used as a crude prison in the late 1700s. It has barrel vaulted ceilings and columns constructed of brick, making it a true architectural masterpiece. However, it's more known for its infamous past as a torturous prison. The Dungeon was a damp, cold place that had no means of warming its temperature. Men and women were held captive together. Falsely-accused innocents were crowded next to hardened criminals and prostitutes. Many prisoners, both innocent and guilty, died from contagious diseases caused by the horrid prison conditions.
